A julgar pelas belas restaurações pelas quais muitos filmes clássicos andam passando, dá para se ter uma ideia do estilo visual e da textura da imagem que a gangue da finalização vai dar nas próximas semanas em É Quase Verdade. Apenas para ilustrar um caso, basta dar uma olhada na foto acima, tirada do frame do Blu-Ray de Casablanca edição de 70o aniversário. O plano do fotógrafo Mario Cassettari e do diretor Emanuel Mendes é transpor ao máximo a textura da película para o produto final.

Judging by the finest restorations that some cinema classics have been undergoing, we can have a slightly clear idea of the visual style and texture that the folks finishing up It´s Almost True plan to give to the film. To better illustrate the case, check out the image above, taken directly from the frame of the 70th anniversary Blu-Ray edition of Casablanca. The plan from DP Mario Cassettari and director Emanuel Mendes is to transfer the most accurate texture from the grains of film to the final product.

História da Proporção de Tela History of Aspect Ratio

Run, Cary, run!

Muito bem, dando continuidade ao assunto do post anterior, eis que os chapas do site FilmmakerIQ (aqui: http://filmmakeriq.com/), um dos melhores quando o assunto é cinema, disponibilizaram uma muito bem-feita e divertida aula sobre a história da proporção de tela. Para quem não sabe, este é o tamanho do frame das tomadas do jeito que foram filmadas. Como É Quase Verdade foi todo rodado com a câmera 5D da Canon, a proporção é 16x9, com janela 1.78:1, mas o diretor Emanuel Mendes e o diretor de fotografia Mario Cassettari irão reenquadrar o frame para 1.66:1, um formato, segundo o diretor, "mais apropriado ao tipo da história que contamos." Assista ao vídeo acima para entender as mudanças ao longo do tempo e como elas influenciaram a estética dos filmes.

Very well, continuing the subject of our last post, the guys from the site FilmmakerIQ (here: http://filmmakeriq.com/), one of the best when it comes to film and the filmmaking process, have made avaiable a very nice and very fun cinema lesson on the history of the aspect ratio. For those of you who don´t know about this or are not very much into the technical gobbledygook, this is the size of the frame the way it was composed in the final film. Since It´s Almost True was shot entirely using the Canon 5D digital camera, the proportion goes for 16x9, with the aspect ratio on 1.78:1, but director Emanuel Mendes and DP Mario Cassettari will reframe it entirely to 1.66:1, a format, according to Mendes, "more appropriate to the kind of story we´re unfolding." Em recente conversa com o diretor Emanuel Mendes, o diretor de fotografia Mario Cassettari já se comprometeu a dar o tapa final nas imagens de É Quase Verdade. Segundo nossas fontes, a dupla não apenas irá acertar a janela no aspect ratio de 1.66:1 ("Mais adequado a este tipo de filme; é uma estética que necessita mais altura do que lateral", segundo o diretor Mendes), uma das preferências, aliás, de Luis Buñuel, um diretor na top list de Emanuel, como também irá mexer no contraste e luminosidade do filme. 

"Conversamos e ele me disse que quer tirar um pouco o aspecto vídeo do filme, e o que vamos fazer é incorporar um pouco de grão à textura para ficar o mais próximo da película, até onde isso seja possível", diz. Mexer nas imagens da pós-produção não é uma novidade para Mario Cassettari, já que o fotógrafo também trabalha com finalização de imagem, e é colorista de filmes e shows em geral – em 2012, por exemplo, finalizou o DVD Caixa de Ódio, de Arrigo Barnabé. Fez a montagem do clipe Tietê, de Chico Saraiva, e coordenou a captação de El Grande Concerto, show realizado no Teatro Oficina e produzido pela Casa de Francisca com mais de 40 artistas de expressão da música contemporânea paulistana.

In a recent conversation with director Emanuel Mendes, DP Mario Cassettari has already compromised himself to twiddling on the images for It´s Almost True. According to our sources, the duo will not only set up the aspect ratio to 1.66:1 ("It´s more adequate to this kind of film; it´s an aesthetic that needs more height than laterals", says director Mendes), one of the main preferences of Luis Buñuel, Emanuel´s top ten directors, but they will also work on the luminosity and contrast of the image.

"We talked and he told me that he intends to clean up this video-look from the picture, trying to achieve a film-look bringing to the forefront the grains, as far as it is possible for this sort of material", says the cinematographer. Meddling up on post production image is nothing new to Mario Cassettari, a professional accostumed to finishing up films, shows and materials alike - in 2012, for instance, he finished up the DVD box set of Caixa de Ódio, by Arrigo Barnabé. Also, he has edited the videoclip Tietê, by Chico Saraiva, and has coordenated the filming of El Grande Concerto, a musical show at Teatro Oficina and produced by Casa de Francisca with more than 40 artists of the contemporary musical scene in São Paulo.

Impossible to put into words what Marilia de Lima has been doing behind the scenes in relation to working with directors Emanuel Mendes and Francisco Costabile. This cultural producer and administrator, who for years commanded the Cooperativa Cultural Brasileira, managing both the projects and the artists behind them, has not only embraced the cause but also has been showing to be an extremely faithful allied - very much in synch (sic) with her entrepreneurship spirit. For awhile it is enough to say that Marilia is not only helping out to produce a more than dear project for Sincronia Filmes but also the entire launching campaign for It´s Almost True, which includes... well, we´re not the ones to spoil the whole surprise, are we? O negócio é o seguinte: É Quase Verdade já está praticamente pronto, aguardando apenas o aval do diretor Emanuel Mendes em relação a alguns pequenos detalhes, como cliques, zumbidos, interferências, diálogos, e onde exatamente a trilha sonora composta por Marcel Soares vai entrar - tudo isso, é claro, tem ligação direta com o DropBox, o software de distribuição e estoque de arquivos que, segundo nossas fontes, está se mostrando uma mão na ronda para pessoas extremamente ocupadas e com mil coisas para resolver ao mesmo tempo. Well, after some time since our last post (wow, is it been 6 months already???), here we are bringing some fresh news on our little short film. That´s the thing: It´s Almost True is practically ready, just waiting director Emanuel Mendes´s final OK in relation to some small details, like clicks, hummings, interferences, dialogues, and where exactly the sound score, composed by Marcel Soares, is gonna fit - and all that, of course, is connected to DropBox, the software responsible for storage and content distribuition which has been a one in a million choice for extremelly busy people.
