Ok, we know that we had informed about that on our last post, but nobody could´ve ever expected something like that, especially in the middle of a very long holiday: our insiders in the highest ranks at Sincronia Filmes - and with a little help from our friends Franklin Fleming, administrator Anthayr Souza (from Facebook) and a small push from producer Bianka Saccoman - have advanced the news that It´s Almost True has already found its way and is in the editing room. The idea is that director Emanuel Mendes and editor Francisco Costabile (CEOs and owners at Sincronia, BTW) conclude the work by the end of the first week in May, so the film can go on in the finishing process. Of course we will let everybody know about what´s going on (and it seems there´s some heat debated subjects on the horizon, with a possible premiere date). So keep an eye on us at our social networks on Facebook and Twitter. And just to finish, we´ve selected a page that you might find interesting (in Portuguese only, folks, so sorry):

Olhando Para o Futuro do Cinema Looking At The Future of Cinema

Born in Ribeirão Preto, in the São Paulo countryside, Guilherme de Almeida Prado is not only one of the best and most talented film directors working in Brazilian cinema, but also one of the few people who really appreciate, understand and work for the film medium like no other: he is probably one of the fewest, if not the only one in Brazil, who hasn´t been affected by trends, fashions and clichès, and the one who really makes filmic films - where experimental language smoothly dialogues with his sharp sense of humor and the ever shallow entertainment elements as a whole - and constantly work on film language and film sense without falling in the opening and cozy arms of conventionalism. The curious thing is that this civil engineer - who graduated from Mackenzie University in São Paulo - has never really studied Film, but had his apprenticeship and training on real film sets at the Boca do Lixo region in São Paulo downtown in the 1970s, working as director assistant for Ody Fraga, David Cardoso and Luiz Castellini, before making his first and most successful feature film "As Taras de Todos Nós". And curiously enough, he learned how to grow to more personal and sophisticated films such as "Flor do Desejo", "The Lady From The Shangai Cinema", "Scent of Gardenia", "The Magic Hour" and more recently "Whatever Happened to Dulce Veiga?", based on the book by his writer friend Caio Fernando Abreu. "He is my mantra, one of my heroes, one of the fewest people I know who really appreciates and like the cinema: it was a natural choice to cast him for "It´s Almost True" to give a truly defining line of what it is like to make movies in Brazil and Latin America", says director Emanuel Mendes. "Besides, it´s not always one gets the chance to know his/her idols, and better still, make friends with them", completes Emanuel. For all this, Guilherme has received the term cinephile filmmaker, thanks to the publishing of a book  on the director´s life and even more due to the other book covering the detailed script for his latest achievement. In it, Guilherme gives the most precise thinking about his art and what it means to him the cinema itself: "A lot of people got upnosed about "Whatever Happened to Dulce Veiga?", stating the film was personal and playing against the rules. Well, personal is something my films have always been. I am unable to make them differently. I would seriously like not to be playing against the rules, but at this very moment, when Brazilian Cinema seems to be looking at its past, trying to repeat formulas from the glorious days of the Cinema Novo movement, I am happy and proud to be playing against the rules, to be looking at the future of cinema."

Um Pouco de Tudo A Little Bit of Everything

De braços abertos à experimentação.               Opening arms to experimenting.

He was (and still is) a little bit of everything: filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, film critic, TV hoster, a researcher at the defunct Embrafilme, director assistant for Carlos Reichenbach and Walter Hugo Khouri, Disney representative in Brazil, besides having used a lot of pseudonyms and double identities throughout a career that spans over a decade now: nobody can stop Paolo Gregori. Not even Jean Luc Godard, the subject of a short film by Paolo and Murillo Mathias - his partner in the ever crazy art of 16mm guerrilla filmmaking -, and of one of the juiciest tales ever told by this maverick, experimental and multitalented artist. That´s why we wanted him so much to compose the cast for "It´s Almost True", making part of an exciting sequence in São Paulo downtown: "I just had left the shooting of a pompous and expensive extravaganza and suddenly saw myself in the middle of an art-house production, with very few people in the crew, the camera following me wherever I would go, having to say improvised phrases and talk to people in the streets like a lunatic from another dimension. And when we finished, I had to ask myself: Did this really happen?" Yes, it so happenned that is is becoming one of the most spectacular sequences in "It´s Almost True".

Da Comunicação Extra-Sensorial Com Um Sapo Wherein We Discuss Extra Sensorial Communication With a Toad

It doesn´t really matter the way he is dressed, or even disguised, or acting out behind the camera as a producer or sometimes as assistant director - the area in which André Campos Mesquita is a master is certainly the written words: either as a translator, for the collection about philosophy thinkers at Editora Escala; as a theater author, punctuating some plays for the Célia Helena Theater School, as a writer, giving life to the recent biography on Charles Darwin, or especially as a scriptwriter, which brought him together with director Emanuel Mendes on two short film works: "Amarar" (2008, commonly known as "Wave" in international title), whose polemic in this festival was restricted to email exchange culminating at the rejection of the movie by the very same festival, and of course "It´s Almost True", whose script was conceived at the table of a bar. "We don´t really know how it happened", says André. "But similar to "Amarar", whose first script versions wouldn´t really say anything to the viewer, the drafts for what would eventually be the final version of "It´s Almost True" were born by chance." Or, like the author says, "from the help of a toad." "This is because we were at the bar scribbling some notes on a napkin (the classic way!), and when I went to the bathroom taken by curiosity on Emanuel´s comment about a clay toad sculpture decorating the toilet entrance, I think there was some kind of extra sensorial, or metaphysical connection between us, because when I got back the ideas sprouted as a revelation that the only hard work we eventually had afterwards was to reunite them together in a concise and funny screenplay that would eventually be filmed. And it was what Emanuel did minutes later after we said good-bye at the bar." As one can see, it´s not only words that bond the two friends together: extra sensorial and metaphysical conditions are also very common.

Ainda Não É O Filme Not The Movie Yet

O número foi coincidência, ok?              The number was just a coincidence, ok?

Like we said in the previous post, there´s another material being edited about our film "It´s Almost True". Courtesy of our dear friend Alberto Ismael - who also serves cups of coffee between the intervals -, a.k.a. Betão, of whom we mentioned about in another post that you probably know very well. Although there´s still some material to film, which will certainly give a better result, it is much likely that what you´ll see pretty soon is exactly what Betão has been editing: the making of "It´s Almost True".

Perfeitamente Feliz Perfectly Happy

A produtora Lindsay Doran      Producer Lindsay Doran

Bem-vindos a 2012.

Ok, we were all in debt considering new posts and updates for this blog, but better late than never, right? BTW, happy new year to us all. Actually this very first 2012 post comes with happy news for happy people - but not only for them: it´s a New York Times article delivered Sunday January 15th in which American film producer Lindsay Doran - an ex-president at United Artists and fund raiser for such projects as "The Firm"; "Sense and Sensibility" and "Stranger Than Fiction" - comments on the fact that Hollywood (and all commercial cinema as a whole) needs and thinks that its films should always come with a happy ending in order not only to please the audience, but also imagining that such strategy would eventually raise the profits of  tickets. But Doran is a sensible omnivore who seems to really love and cherish films - no matter if they are dark, light or something in between. That is, that kind of producer every director dreams of. At the Austin Film Festival last year she got surprised at the enormity of screenwriters in potencial worried about simply writing material that could be sold to the next big studio, and not exactly thinking about writing about something they liked, cared or loved. And after reading a book that she called "positive-psychology movement", she got some really nice results. They can be discovered on the link below, something, by the way, that every producer with a minimum degree in film knowledge should carry around for the rest of their lives.

P.S.: "It´s Almost True" is on its way: the editing process is about to begin. Meanwhile, another material is at the brink of editing too, but these subjects will be delivered in future posts right here in this blog. Welcome to 2012.
